First and Second Class were wondering about how flowers bloom in Spring.(Click on the photo to see photos and video).
They discovered that plants need water and sunlight in order to grow. They talked about the fact that if a plant is withered and we add water to it that it quickly grows and opens its petals again!
First and Second Class made some paper flowers and folded them up. Then they added the flowers to some water. They discovered that the petals on the paper flowers opened all by themselves!
The magic flowers were powered by a scientific phenomenon called “capillary action”.
Thanks to capillary action, paper absorbs water very quickly. When paper gets wet, it swells, which causes the folded petals of the magic flowers to open up.
